Foothills
In a pre-war article, Ossendowski wrote “Pogórze – is an undulating country of flat, accessible hillsides, generally not exceeding 500 metres above the sea surface, although here and there higher mountains rise, such as Liwocz, Brzanka, Chełm, Królewska Góra and Sucha”. Reading his description of the Podgórze, it’s not hard to disagree with him, having ridden almost 5,000km along them in search of the most attractive marathon route possible, one would like to add much more. But that would be unfair to the participants.
The foothills and the places you manage to get to will be so magical that it would be tactless to write about them and take away the pleasure of tasting them. And they will taste in May of the sweet scent of fruit trees, the rain washing away the post-winter dust and the salty sweat of the participants. Such will be the foothills, joyful, cold, happy, wet, fragrant and heavy. There will be something for everyone, either racing and the joy of victory, or overcoming and the joy of adventure. But the joy will be in every kilometre of this route and at the finish. Anyone who has not been to the foothills should not go to Calpe. It is not for nothing that our marathon call has become ‘Calpe Diem’. Why? You will know why at the finish line.
